Trip Review

The GET is considered to be the best day hike in Pennsylvania and I must second that. It is absolutely beautiful. This hike offers great vistas with huge views, two amazing runs, a nice change in forest canopy, the "Ravenshorn Vista," and 5 miles north of here you can check out the neat little town of Slate Run.

This trail starts off Rt414, a sign for the trailhead can be seen from the road and parking is available right across the street. Enter the trail through what looks to be a dark and mysterious passageway. Head upstream along Bonnell Run (cool rockslide looking run) that traverses through some Hemlocks and Pines. Turn right ascending a rocky steep section at m3.27 to your first vista .2 miles away. Traveling SSE to the Beulah Vista at m3.73 (very pretty vista, good lunch spot). Travel along the mountain top for .6 miles reach the next vista at m4.31. Next you will descend the mountain reaching Wolf Run. At the Watson Fork area look up and to your right, you should see a big rock formation, this is Wolf Rock. A small view of the mountain side can be seen from here, when the leaves are not in bloom. There are also some big holes in the rocks up there where some animals most definitely live. Travel down this neat run and reach the... what appears to be a fault line and sidewalk surface rocks that sit underneath the run. Turn west (right) and prepare to climb to the Ravenshorn Vista! This section is challenging. You will pass some very cool rock ledges (m7.34). Be careful as rattlesnakes may live up here. Climb another .2 miles ascending 200ft. to the Ravenshorn! This vista offers a huge panoramic view up and down Wolf Run & the Pine Creek. Look east to the next mountain range and see an open spot, this is the Wolf Run Bald Vista on the Bob Webber trail (founder & creator of the Black Forest Trail). The Bob Webber trail is a short 3-4 mile hike that offers 2 great vistas. Head west and descend the mountain slowly turning north. You will intersect the Bonnell Run section at m8.75. Turn left or you will begin to hike the GET again. Begin your 3rd of a mile journey, out to your vehicle.

Directions

From Route 220, take Rt.44 N, the Pine Creek exit. Bear right onto Rt. 414 N. Follow this road along the Pine Creek until you reach the small boat launch area known as "Black Walnut Bottom." The trailhead is to your right, park in the parking area. Its about 24.5 miles from the Pine Creek exit or about 2 miles south of Slate Run.
