Trip Review
This section of the MST starts out off
Rt.45 at Hairy John's Picnic area. The picnic area is a nice place to do
exactly that. Large parking lot, covered pavilion and grilling pits. Also
the drive over the mountains from R.B. Winter State Park was nice too,
especially at Winkelblech Vista.
Soon after starting the hike at Hairy
John's you come across a small pond with a spring and a nice spot for a
campsite. Then you begin to ascent the mountain by climbing over some rocks,
which made for welcoming start to the hike. At mile 1 you will reach a view
looking out to the next mountain range (only one of the trail, bummer). At
about 2.25 miles you will reach the Cinder Pile Spring and cabin located off
Stony Run Rd. You will then make a left off the road, climb the mountain and
reach a campsite on the trail at mile 3.05. The water here was low. We came
across 9 campsites in all with only about 3 getting the GCS mark of a
approval (good campsite). At mile 5.63 you will walk Stover Gap Rd. for
about a half mile. From here on out you will walk the top of Mt. passing
some marshy areas and crossing several trails for the rest of the way until
you reach R.B. Winter State Park.
The park is a very nice place with some
geocaches hidden in the area. Several small hiking trails, and a nice dam
with ok primitive camping. It seems this park is mostly for small RV
campers. Make a weekend out of it, camp at the park, hike the trail and then
kayak a river or two!
Directions
Section 4's trail head is located at
Hairy John's Picnic Area off Rt.45 East of Woodward and west of Laurelton
State Village. The nearest bigger town is Mifflinburg, which is about 12
miles east of the picnic area on Rt.45. From Rt.15 take Rt.45 west for about
21 miles to the Picnic Area.
The take-point (R.B. Winter) is about 18
miles west of Lewisburg on Rt.192. There will be signs for the park. The
trail crosses at the end of the dam by the sign. If you are traveling from
the park to the put-in point it is easiest to travel Rt.192 west to Stover
Gap Rd, about 5 miles down Rt.192. From here turn left and follow Stover Gap
Rd. for about 4.25 miles where it will turn into Stony Run Rd. Follow Stony
Run Rd. for about 2 miles. Then turn right onto Winkelblech Mtn. Rd. and
follow this road for about 1.8 miles to the picnic area.

Trip Review
This section of the MST started out great
and climaxed at the vista on Round Top mountain, but quickly became boring
once we hit the roads that lasted the rest of the hike, which was five
miles!
This section starts in Ravensburg State
Park. Cross Rt.880 at the MST sign to begin you hike. The first 2.25 miles
you will travel around the mountain heading north to east. Crossing and
hooking up with the Great Island Path at m2.23. From here you will ascend
the hollow and meet up with the Kyler Trail at m2.74. Heading NW across the
mountain you will meet up with Ramm Road and an incredible vista down the
road at m4.38 that looks out over the Nippenose Valley. From here you will
travel the road, leave the road and cross Bixel Rd. at m5.38. Next, you will
merge with some deer trails, Yarns Run Trail and cross Love Run and a
campsite at the bottom of Round Top Mt. Prepare for the climb to top, its
pretty steep! At m7.09 you will reach a rock outcropping to your right this
is the vista overlooking Lock Haven to Avis. After checking out the vista,
you will descend to Henry Run and cross the run at m7.88. Soon after this
you will hook up with Pine Rd. (m8.01) and eight more roads until you reach
the destination at Rt150 by Susque-View Animal Hospital.
Between mile 8 and 13 you will travel
River Road, on this section, you get a good view of the mountain range by
Rt220. Round Top Mt. is visible too, it's the little one all the way to the
left. The rock outcropping itself can not be seen, but you will see a small
opening in the trees where it is. At m11.89 you will pass a monument where a
Delaware Indian Village used to be. Next, travel up an abutment, cross the
Susquehanna River and back down the other side of the bridge to hook up with
another road at m12.29. The take-out is a 6th of a mile away.
Directions
Section 6 trailhead is located at Ravensburg State Park. Located 9 miles south of Jersey Shore off Rt.880 or
6.5 miles north of exit 192 Jersey Shore off I-80. The take-out or other
trail head is located on Rt.150 near Pine Creek Animal Hospital between Avis
& McElhattan. Look for the orange blazes located on the opposite side of the
hospital.

Trip Review
The trail started off on a dirt road that
quickly disappeared into some thick area, but cleared up onto an old log
road. In fact, most of this section of the MST was made up of old log road,
grassy road, and old skid roads that it made it nice traveling. The two
mountains that you climb in this section are challenging and the small rocks
on the trail make it rough on the ankles! But, it was fun and enjoyable.
About 1.25 miles into the hike you leave
the woods and begin a short walk on some paved roads through Woolrich. Park
Avenue is a neat road with some nice house on it. At m1.71 you begin your
short walk around Woolrich Park and the cross back over Park Avenue,
continue straight up the hillside next to a retirement home at m2.25. At the
top turn right then left and follow the MST to the top right corner of the
field. There is a very nice vista from this point looking out over Woolrich.
Begin to climb the first of two mountains traveling old log roads and dirt
roads heading in a northward direction. No campsites were present until mile
5.18 on Spring Run. Cross a small parking area off Coudersport Pike Trail.
Reach your 2nd vista heading east at mile 6.70 looking out over the Tomb's
Run area. Continue east along the ridge and then south down the mountain to
the best camping area, Gamble Run (m8.03). Head upstream passing abundant
spots for camping, but no real established campsites were present (some, but
very limited) Leave Gamble Run heading north up Schultz Fork at m8.95.
Prepare for the worst ascend of this trail. Close to the top is a blue side
trail heading west to a spectacular view according to the book, m9.68. We
decided not to travel this side trail, I will visit it by the time the
summer is over.
Cross Bull Run Rd and a small parking
area at m10.30. There are some great vistas off Bull Run Rd. that are worth
driving to! Ascend the mountain towards Pine Creek. Once you reach the
bottom the rest of the hike is a piece of cake. You will reach your 3rd
vista at m11.68. At mile 11.87 you will begin to parrallel the Pine Creek
Rails-to-Trails and also pass some very cool rock formations on the left.
Cross the RR bed at m12.31 and enter the Camp Kline Area (an old Boy Scout
Camp) turn left and travel through the camp. Then turn left and then right
back on the Trail System at m12.82. Follow PC R-T out to Ramsey, turn right
and then right again on PA-44. Follow 44 for a short distance to your car
located on the right-hand side of the road.
Directions
The put-in point is located off PA-150
directly across the street from the Susque-View Animal Hospital located in
Woolrich, PA. There is a nice parking area there for a vehicle or two. From
Rt.220, take the Avis Exit. Turn left and follow PA-150 for about 2.25
miles. The animal hospital is on the right and the parking area is on the
left.
The take-out point is located off PA-44
just south of "downtown" Ramsey. It is about 7.5 miles north from Rt.220's
Pine Creek Exit. The parking area is located around the sharp bend in the
road. There will be a pulloff/parking area there. This is the Ramsey Canoe
Access Area. There is plenty of parking here. Section 8 of the MST is
directly across the street on the mountain side of the road.

This too was a very nice hike, a little
easier than section 7 and offered a little more seclusion than the last
section. Section 8 begins with no remorse for your legs. You will climb
roughly 1200ft. from an elevation of 500' to 1700' over a 1.3 miles stretch
through a series of long & some short switchbacks. Shortly into the hike
about .13m you will make a sharp left hand turn. The next spot to pay
attention to is around .5m where the trail marker makes a left hand turn
around a fallen tree (hopefully it won't be there for you to miss the
markers like we did). Once you have crested the mountain at m1.36 you will
traverse through mountain laurel. Meet up with a dirt road and a grassy road
with a small campsite with no water and hang a right onto the grassy road at
m1.60. Follow the grassy road for a short distance and hang left back into
the woods. Desend to a small tributary upstream, climb your second mountain,
but this time you will be reward with a view of the valley at m2.49 will you
will make a left on a side trail to "Camp Kline Vista" less than 100yds.
away. After you have taken in the view continue north on the trail down to
another intermittant stream. Hang a left and follow the stream to Ramsey Run
m3.70 where you will cross a small footbridge along with a small campsite.
Look out for Itchweed along the stream it was everywhere! We also saw a
rattlesnake sunning himself here too.
The trail continues NW to Pansey Drive
(an old log road) where you will turn left heading south on the road. There
is a campsite right before the turn off in the distance at m3.84. There is
another at 3.90 where you leave the road and turn right up the moutainside
on Ramsey Trail/MST. The trail here is well-defined and easy to follow.
There were a bunch of PCS locations from m4.60-m4.81, but no real fire rings
anywhere along the run that we could see. At m5.44 you will turn right on
Ramsey Run and left off Ramsey Run by a Parking spot a m5.46. The trail then
heads NW to Tram Road m5.76, which is an old grassy road. Make a left and
follow it for a little over a mile. You will pass a campsite on the road,
but it obviously has no water supply. Turn right off Tram Road at m6.81 and
descend a steep section of the trail to Dam Run Road & Dam Run. There is a
small bridge there. This is a neat area where the water has carved out the
rock under the bridge. There is also a campsite downstream, all of this is a
m7.37. Follow the ridge around heading up the east side with Little Pine
Creek to your left. Here you can make some great time, because it is
relatively flat to Little Pine State Park at m9.84. Your take-out vehicle is
about .25 miles up to your right by the ranger contact station. Sr4001 is
about another 100yds. up the park road. Prior to exiting the park you will
pass two possible spots for camping, one at m8.25 and another at m8.66.
Directions
The put-in point is located off PA-44
just south of "downtown" Ramsey. It is about 7.5 miles north from Rt.220's
Pine Creek Exit. The parking area is located on the left side at the end of
a sharp left-hand bend in the
road. There will be a pulloff area there that leads down to the Pine Creek. This is the Ramsey Canoe
Access Area. There is plenty of parking here. Section 8 of the MST is
directly across the street on the mountain side of the road. This is the
2001 relocated section that cuts about 3.7 miles out overall. 10 minute
drive from the highway.
The take-out point is quite simple. Just
park at Little Pine State Park camping area. There is a nice parking lot to
the left of the Contact Station. To located LPSP take SR4001 from Waterville
for about 3.5 miles. Turn right down into the campgrounds right past Happy
Acres Restaurant. Waterville is located about 10 miles up PA-44 from Rt.220.
Its a 20 minute drive from the highway.

Trip Review
This was one of our
favorite hikes along the Mid State Trail. This section of the MST offers
great diversity. The trail is just shy of 15 miles, not including the
blue-blazed trail to two vistas. The hike begins in Blackwell and heads
north to Rt.287 by Antrim Rd. The topography was rugged, beautiful,
historic, easy and plentiful. The water was excellent too! Yes, this hike
offers great variety.
Start your
hike off by parking at Blackwell Canoe Access Area, if you can find a spot!
Cross Rt. 414 and head up the Pine Creek Rail Trail located along the east
side of the rim. Follow PCRT for 1.18 miles to Stone Quarry Run. Turn right
and begin to climb sharply up Stone Quarry Run. Cool waterfall at the mouth
of Stone Quarry Run. The trail quickly begins to give you a bit of its
attitude. Look around, I wonder why they call it Stone Quarry Run? j/k. You
will reach the top at about 2.16 where you will merge with a blue-blazed
trail part of Fork Hill Rd. Must have been an old logging rd. We did not
take this trail to the first possible view, because it was miles out of the
way. Soon you will reach another blue-blazed trail that I do recommend you
hike along. You will come across two to three vistas, the first looks across
the rim to Jerry Run & Bohen Run, you can even see the West Rim Rd. Keep
following the trail to come across a second and a third view looking down
Pine Creek & up Stone Quarry Run. Back track and head left on the MST. Nice
easy walking for a bit. Descend to Water Tank Run at m3.81 & cross the other
branch in about .5 miles. The blue-blazed trail down to Pine Creek and the
waterfalls could be rewarding in high water, but again it was way out of the
way. The trail chances and becomes rocky. The rock formations before and
after you cross Clay Mine Rd. (m5.20) are very cool. Reach Mossy Run at
m5.71 and descend to awesome looking Stony Fork Creek. Follow Stony Fork for
about 1.7 miles. Camping is exceptional along this section of the trail.
Other than that good luck finding one! This trail is so new that there are
no campsites established and it would be hard to set up camp based off the
topography along all of the runs, except Stony Fork in which they don’t want
you to camp along, hmmm?
Ford Stony
Fork and don’t forget your water shoes (m7.71)! Ascend Roland Run, cross
over Roland and head to the top of Tannery Hill Mt. Nice area of the trail
here too. Easy walking for a bit, thank goodness! Reach Tannery Hill Rd. &
parking area at m9.94. Descend to Slide Hollow, ohhh be sure to sign both
trail registers along this trail. Be ready for a nasty climb; check out the
old incline house too. Can you believe they built such a structure way up on
the mountain over 100 years ago! From here you will ascend and descend to a
few runs before walking across a very neat section of the trail along some
deep crevices a top the mountain along the edge. There is a great panoramic
vista at mile 13.85. Hike the road for a mile down to Rt. 287 to complete
your 14.91 mile hike or backpacking trip!
Directions
The start of this trail is in Blackwell, PA. Park at the Blackwell Canoe
Access Area. The trailhead is across the Rt.414 on the eastern side of the
Pine Creek right at the Pine Creek Rail Trail (PCRT) yellow gate. Blackwell
is 37 miles north of the Pine Creek exit. Take Rt.44 north to Rt.414 north.
From the opposite direction Blackwell is about 22 miles from Ansonia, PA.
